Texts you don't want to get from your renters

Everyone (and everything) is fine.  Probably just some construction dust in the heater, but a pretty exciting way to start your day!

The Normal House is always the same building.

On visiting the Gold Pavilion Temple in Kyoto, Douglas Adams was impressed at how well the 14th-century structure had weathered the passage of time. His Japanese guide told him that it hadn't weathered well at all; in fact it had burned to the ground twice in the 20th century.

"So this isn't the original building?" Adams asked.

"But yes, of course it is."

"But it's been burned down?"

"Yes."

"Twice."

"Many times."

"And rebuilt."

"Of course. It is an important and historic building."

"With completely new materials."

"But of course. It was burned down."

"So how can it be the same building?"

"It is always the same building."

Jamie and Colin have moved in!

posted Nov 27, 2012, 10:11 AM by Colin Jemmott

Jamie and Colin are now officially Normal House residents.  Thanks to all those that helped with the move and the renovation work to get things going.  The house still needs a ton of work, but it is getting to be livable.

The next two residents will be arriving shortly.  Very exciting!

First Residents!

The Normal House is (partially) occupied!  The first residents, Kim and Martin, moved in this weekend.  There is still quite a bit of renovation going on, but it is starting to feel more complete in places.  Kim did manage to shock herself on a switch that didn't have a cover plate yet, so there is still some work to do...  Jamie and Colin expect to move in a month or so.  I will have to post some before and after pictures at some point, because the difference is pretty amazing.  Still a long road to go, but this is a big step!

Squatters!

posted Sep 10, 2012, 6:49 PM by Colin Jemmott

Construction is coming along nicely.  The only interesting news so far is that while I was pulling out some shelving from the upstairs back house I found a pile of duffle bags and a backpack.  Looks like we had a squatter at one point!

In the bags I found:

Loads of women's clothing
Toiletries including fifteen different bottles of girly stuff and a flat iron
laundry detergent
Cheerleader costume
Pipe and small pot stash
Needles (used)
Public restroom token from Indiana
Ziplock of glass beads
Six pesos in coins
Lock pick set, small crow bar
49 keys to houses and cars
Bullwhip
Iron cross cell phone holder with chrome skulls
An old family photo

On the upside the backpack is pretty nice, and I had been wanting a new one!

It is official!

Loan funded, deed recorded, keys in hand.  We own the Normal House!

Look for more announcements in a few weeks, after the big celebration we are throwing in the desert.

Jamie and Colin get the keys to the Normal House on Aug 13 a date to be determined.

Come join us for a pot luck.  Your only chance to see the place pre-renovation, while it is still empty and broken.  Starts at 6 PM.  We will provide a grill and some music - you need to bring everything else (chairs especially).

Join the email list to get updates and the address.

Normal House Vision Workshop II

posted Jul 24, 2012, 8:56 PM by Colin Jemmott

Please join us a second workshop activity designed to articulate our shared community values, so that they can later be distilled down into a community vision that describes the shared future we want to create. Ideally it will result in a document that announces our core values, is a reference point that we can return to, and keeps us inspired.

The meeting will be Sunday July 29th from 2-5 PM.  Location TBD.

Even if you are not considering living with us, you are part of our community and I hope that you are able and willing to attend and participate. Feel free to invite people that you think would contribute to the discussion.

Workshop on Articulating Core Community Values

posted Jul 7, 2012, 7:52 PM by Colin Jemmott   [ updated Jul 7, 2012, 7:57 PM ]

I am proud to announce the New Normal House Project, an intentional community beginning in Normal Heights in October.

We are still early in the process, and are beginning to clearly define the goals of this project, decide on a governance and decision making structure, and identify future residents. And I already need your help!

Please join us for a series of workshop activities designed to articulate our shared community values, so that they can later be distilled down into a community vision that describes the shared future we want to create. Ideally it will result in a document that announces our core values, is a reference point that we can return to, and keeps us inspired.  The event is on Sunday, July 22nd, at 2 pm.

Even if you are not considering living with us, if you are part of our community then I hope that you are able and willing to attend and participate.

Contact Colin or Jamie if you are interested in attending.
